Change and Living Life ‘A Day at a Time’

Today I have read three very different readings about recovery but all were relevant to me. The first was about how we consider not drinking ‘one day at a time’ and why this works. I must admit, this principle has puzzled me a little in the past. If we really have to live our lives one day at a time, does that mean that we are unable to live like other people, making plans and looking forward to things? Does it not imply that recovering addicts are existing on a daily basis rather than really living life to the full?

Happy Life

The answer to this has to be no or else why are so many of us in recovery living a really happy life – even happier than the life we lived when we were partying and not out of control? More of this below, but from my perspective the reason why ‘one day at a time’ works is because it is impossible to be absolutely certain that we will never drink or use again. If we get too complacent or confident, then we might slip up – and we all know the misery this will bring. We can be confident that we are not going to drink in the short term though because we know how strong and firm our recovery is NOW.

Recovery

Being in recovery is fantastic. We still have to face lives problems – they do not go away just because we have stopped drinking or using. We have to live life on life’s terms, as we say. However, we can now find pleasure in such simple and straightforward things – the seasons, nature and wildlife; being with our families and friends and enjoying our homes – and having the time and energy now available that we previously spent drinking, using, covering our tracks or in a befuddled haze. We wake up ready to face the day rather than regretting yesterday.

We Have Changed

The reason that our lives have changed is because we have changed. Sometimes the change is quite subtle but everyone who embraces recovery can vouch for the change they have felt within themselves. It happens for the people who come to the Haynes Clinic during their treatment with us – usually during the space of 3 – 4 weeks. I tell those who book in that they will change and become happy during their time with us.

At the time I tell them this, their lives are so miserable they cannot conceptualise being happy again or believe it. But it happens and they tell me I was right as they leave! Getting clean and sober and getting back to happiness is a miracle. We rediscover laughter, feeling our feelings and seeing there is hope. The debris of the past can be put behind us – and our eyes are opened. We become broader minded and more compassionate – and eventually ready and willing to help those still suffering from the disease of addiction.

The Haynes Clinic is a drug and alcohol rehab clinic offering detox and treatment for those suffering from addiction to alcohol, drugs and prescription medication.
