Do Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centres Work?

A worthwhile investment

Anyone looking into drug, alcohol or gambling rehab centre will want to be reassured that it works. This is especially true if you are considering a private rehab. This will cost you about £10,000 for a 28 day programme. It is a big investment. You will want to be reassured that you are not going to be wasting your money.

The truth is that drug and alcohol rehab centres can and will work –

If you want it to. There are thousands of us in the UK – millions worldwide – who are living proof of that. Most of us would say that we could not have done it and got clean, sober and happy if we had not been to rehab. It changed our lives and can change yours too.

Drug and alcohol rehab centres do not work by giving a magic fix. Many people start off by thinking that if they could just deal with their depression, stress or anxiety then all would be well. Or if they could sort out their problems in their relationships etc then they would not need to drink or use. In rehab you will cover all of your concerns and problems from the past but dealing with these on their own will not get you well. On the other hand, nor will you get well just by stopping drinking or using.

What will get you well is a combination of:

  • Getting clean and sober physically
  • Having the clarity of thought as a result of this to be able to start to address why you drink and / or use
  • Starting to address your problems with anxiety, low mood, stress, lack of confidence, anger, resentment etc.
  • Learning about the tools you need to help you to cope with everyday life and life’s ups and downs
  • Getting to understand a programme (the 12 Step Programme) which is an effective way for alcoholics and addicts to stay clean and sober and to be happy and fulfilled.

Unlock your inner potential

Essentially you are drinking and using because of how you feel about yourself and how you perceive your experiences of life and the world. All this will be addressed with you. While in drug and alcohol rehab, the way you view things and yourself will be challenged. This happens so that you can get a different perspective and unlock your inner potential. In rehab, you will look at your alcohol and drug use and how your life to date has been chaotic and unmanageable. You will start to get hope of a better future. You will deal with the things that you regret or resent from the past and you will look at making a fresh start.

Embrace and make the most of your time in rehab

Drug and alcohol rehab centres can help you with all of this from providing a detox to get you clean and sober physically, to providing cognitive behavioural therapy to help you change the way you see the world and your attitude to it, to taking you through a 12 Step Programme. If you stay in rehab long enough to complete the treatment programme and deal with all your personal issues, and if you embrace the programme offered – and continue to follow it as advised once you leave – then you will be a treatment success.

Drug and alcohol treatment centres work.

That is 100% true. Will they (or one of them!) work for you? If you want it to and are prepared to work hard in treatment and after treatment and are willing to change – then yes. The drug and alcohol treatment centre will work for you.
