What thoughts and images does Cambridge evoke in you? Cambridge is a beautiful city, famous for its university, museums, students (cycling round the city), the pretty River Cam, and its rivalry with Oxford – most notable in the annual boat race. At the end of the year, when the students graduate, Cambridge will also have plenty of drunk and hungover graduates, celebrating their exam success.
Cambridge people who drink too much
However, this is not the only time that you will come across people who drink too much in Cambridge. Cambridge has a population of around 125,000 which would suggest that approaching 2000 people in Cambridge will have alcohol dependence issues – if Cambridge is in line with national estimates according to the last Adult Psychiatric Morbidity study (2014).
People in Cambridge need help
So somewhere between 1500 and 2000 people in Cambridge probably need help. Where can they get this help? Free help is available from your GP (who might be able to help you with detox medication or refer you to local counselling services). There will also be local drug and alcohol services in Cambridge (Change Grow Live being one of these). And there will be several meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous in Cambridge.
AA
These are held every day of the week, with a number being held on some days at different times and in different locations. Alcoholics Anonymous is a self help group attended by people who have had alcohol problems and those who still have them, helping one another to get and stay sober through a 12 Step Programme. This is not a religious programme but does involve individuals accepting that they need outside help of both human and a spiritual nature.
Rehab in Cambridge
If none of this type of help is meeting your needs then maybe you need to look to the alcohol rehab option. There are rehab clinics in the local area within a reasonable distance of Cambridge and one of these is The Haynes Clinic which is about 30 miles away, near Bedford. At the Haynes Clinic you can have a medically supervised detox, learn about the illness and have one to one and group counselling. The programme is based on you stopping drinking and staying stopped. It is a 12 Step Programme and you will also attend AA while there.
Going to rehab is the most effective and quickest way to get and stay sober. From Cambridge the Haynes Clinic is not too far away so you will be able to have your family visit you while in treatment and also be able to take advantage of a family counselling session if that is going to be of help in your treatment. It is also not too far for you to return for aftercare once you have finished your treatment. This is free and is for a whole day on a Friday for as long as you find it useful.
The Haynes Clinic
The Haynes Clinic has been established since 2008 and has got hundreds of people well since then. If you require transport to the clinic from Cambridge, that can be arranged – just call 01462 851414 to book your admission and transport.
