Increasingly people are abusing multiple drugs at a time. Abusing a single drug is sufficient danger in itself and will often to drug addiction . However when people are further complicating and worsening their situation there is a big problem. This behaviour’s called ‘poly drug’ abuse.
What is poly drug abuse
‘Poly drug’ abuse often found in younger people who are abusing them on the party scene. This ultimately creates a highly dangerous concoction of different drugs in order to create and maintain the high they desire. The most common found in this scenario are ecstasy, speed and cocaine with use of ketamine also rising rapidly. Youths are not only using drugs but are further endangering themselves by putting alcohol into the mix too. Some are even including prescription drugs too. People have of course always taken and abused drugs. However it is becoming much more of customary way of having ‘fun’ to take combinations of multiple drugs which is highly dangerous.
Using drugs to Self-medicate
Self-medication, be it physical or mental, is becoming far more common due to the availability of medications and the internet. These therefore allow individuals to make their own supposedly ‘informed’ decisions regarding their own bodies. In addition to this, medication is becoming more affordable further adding to this problem. Sleeping pills, such as Valium, can easily be obtained without knowing the full extent of the dangers they carry with them. Many individuals believe that if a doctor prescribes them a certain medication it does not carry the same risks as illicit drugs. Furthermore, concentration pills, such as Ritalin and Modafinil. These can be found on websites such as ‘Gumtree’ meaning anyone can buy them.
Drugs effect on the body
This increased acceptance and normalising of prescription drugs has occurred at shockingly fast rates. Consequently more and more people are taking prescription drugs without recognising the effects they are having on their bodies and the addictive nature of them. Moreover, as people are not aware of the dangers with prescription drugs they are being used alongside a concoction of illegal substances. This extreme and senseless substance abuse can be life threatening at worse and hugely detrimental at best. When mixing a multitude of substances this can have a great risk posed to the brain and multiple organs. Abuse can have catastrophic effects on the user’s body.
Drug Dependence of addiction
Not only is poly drug abuse terrible for one’s health but it can very often lead to dependence and addiction. This will have a snowballing effect on the body and mental health. Nevertheless, it will often take a person who are addicted to prescription or over the counter drugs a longer time to figure out that they have an addiction as they believe the drugs they are taking are medically approved for them.
This phenomena of poly drug abuse must be addressed and those who are partaking must realise the dangers they are subjecting themselves to.
